Iran is an Islamic republic or a theocracy. Iran used to have a Dictatorship but now they have a democracy. Iraq used to be called Persia and led by a Shah. If the Shah was overthrown he runs for his life. People that followed the Shah and stayed in Iran were shot or hung. The United States has an embassy in Iran. An Embassy is in another country and people from our country go to stay there. People in that Embassy represent their country. When you are in an embassy you are safe. You also don’t have to follow their rules for the country you are staying in. We had the American Hostage Crisis in Iran. This happened in 1979. This happened because the Shah was overthrown and then he came to America and Iran did not like America and Iran did not want us to protect the Shah. So the Iranians took out their dislike of America protecting the Shah on the people in the Embassy in Iran.

They took over 60 U.S people and blindfolded and tortured them. They only released 13 hostages at first. When Iran did not let all the people out they kept all of the Iranians money they had in banks so they couldn’t take it out. So not everyone was let out at once everyone was let out after less than 2 years.

Also because the countries want to be able to control the oil flow in and out carried by big oil tankers. We also read 3 paragraphs about Iran.

Lots of things are made from oil like toothpaste, trash bags, gasoline, home heating oil and much more. Guess what the most important thing traded between countries is. OIL! Did you know that the first oil well was drilled ion the shore of oil creek in Titusvill PA. Now we have a problem, the oil is running out. There is only 2.6 trillion barrels left in the world. We will only pump out 1.7 trillion barrels, the remaining 900 billion barrels are in rock formations and are heard to get to. 2.6 trillion may seem like a lot but it really is not. Once most of the oil is pumped out of the ground the remaining oil will be harder to get out, also more expensive. Then we will have to look for oil in places we least expect it. I believe that we will run out of oil eventually, and we wil have to come up with alternative sources of energy like solar power and wind power. The fact that we are going to run out of oil just pushes sientests to come up with new forms of energy. The countries that have the most oil formed an organization called OPEC which stands for organization of pateroleum exporting countries. For example the 11 countries that make up OPEC are, Algeria, Indonesia, Iran, Iraq, Kuwait, Libya, Nigeria, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, The United Arab Emirates and Venezuela. Out of all these countries Saudi Arabia has the most crude oil. OPEC can influence the price of oil by increasing and decreasing the supply of oil. Will we run out of oil? Will we be able to find more officiant ways to use oil? Some of these questions will not be answered in OUR lifetime.

Dear Colleen,

Mustafa Kemal was the first president of the Turkish republic. He was president for 15 years. He got the name Ataturk when he removed the sultanate and replaced it with a republic. Attaturk means father of the Turks. Ataturk said we are not allowed to wear vails and that the men can’t wear their fezzes. Which I think is not good at all because our religion is Islam and our religion says we should wear vails and fezzes.

I think he has something against the Islam religion but he did give us the right to vote and go to school outside home. He also gave us the right to take jobs which is the only good thing that he did. Some of the men refused to wear a hat because Ataturk ordered everyone to wear modern clothes. Some men wore bandages around their head as if they were in great pain. So they didn’t have to wear his hat. I said we were allowed to vote but only one political party is allowed to vote so we are pretty much just voting or him. I also said that it is so we can hide our faces. The custom of wearing Fezzes came from an ottaman sultant ordering his soldiers and officials to where fezzes. Turkey is now a republic. Attaturk insists to more than change to Turkeys’ government but he wanted to modernize Turkey. Attaturk also thought that changing what men wore on there heads would change what went on in their heads. He also changed the capital of Turkey from Istanbul to Ankara. This was a big change!! One thing that he did that I never thought he would do was change the alphabet based on the Roman alphabet. I guess he expected us to learn it in 3 months because he was going to have every sign, books and newspaper printed in that alphabet.

Then we took turns reading the poem. Then our class read the first and last lines of the poem and Mr.Hetherington read the rest of it. Next we discussed the poem we talked about what we see or think then we took 2 minutes to circle some of the differences of Istanbul. For example serene and cool in stanza 3 and hammers bang and clang in stanza 3.

To vote you go to the comment section you also have to wright ESPA and why you would give it the ESPA award. You can vote more then one time but not on the same post. Then we looked at a picture of Istanbul.Istanbul is the only city that sits on two different continents Asia and Europe. We had two students take trips. Darain went from the Black sea to the Mediterranean Sea and Rachel c took Daraian’s route back to the Black Sea.
