Iran is an Islamic republic or a theocracy. Iran used to have a Dictatorship but now they have a democracy. Iraq used to be called Persia and led by a Shah. If the Shah was overthrown he runs for his life. People that followed the Shah and stayed in Iran were shot or hung. The United States has an embassy in Iran. An Embassy is in another country and people from our country go to stay there. People in that Embassy represent their country. When you are in an embassy you are safe. You also don’t have to follow their rules for the country you are staying in. We had the American Hostage Crisis in Iran. This happened in 1979. This happened because the Shah was overthrown and then he came to America and Iran did not like America and Iran did not want us to protect the Shah. So the Iranians took out their dislike of America protecting the Shah on the people in the Embassy in Iran.

They took over 60 U.S people and blindfolded and tortured them. They only released 13 hostages at first. When Iran did not let all the people out they kept all of the Iranians money they had in banks so they couldn’t take it out. So not everyone was let out at once everyone was let out after less than 2 years.
